ACU WVB Begins Season With Pair Of Straight Set Victories

Glendale, Ariz.- Play in the Firestorm Volleyball Classic began on Friday and Arizona Christian went 2-0 with a pair of straight victories over Valley City State and Montana State- Northern.  Senior Annabelle Camoirano and Sophomore Brittnie Henige both tallied 19 kills on the day.

  • First set saw four ties and two lead changes
  • Tied 14-14, Camoirano delivered a kill to move ACU ahead for good
  • ACU lead beginning to end in set two
  • First eight points of the third set resulted in a 4-4 tie
  • Camoirano once again broke the tie and the Firestorm stayed ahead for the remainder of the match
  • For the match, ACU hit .360 thanks in large part to a .425 second set

  • Ties at 1-1, 2-2, and 3-3 resulted in a service ace from Fierro to push ACU in front for the rest of the opening set
  • ACU hit .591 in the set with just one error
  • Set two saw a 16-16 tie before Arizona Christian closed the set with a 9-3 run
  • With the third set tied at 19-19, strong serving from Emma Combes including an ace on match point allowed ACU to not surrender another point
  • Petersen led the block party as she teamed with Henige and Camoirano for three straight blocks during the final run

"Today was a great way for us to open up our season.  We are grateful to have a couple wins under our belt but we are even more excited about the competition ahead of us.  We have two tough battles scheduled for tomorrow and we are looking forward to show how we have grown in competitive resilience and grit."

 

Up Next

The Firestorm will face Lewis-Clark State at 2:00 pm on Saturday.  ACU will close out their classic squaring off with Embry-Riddle (AZ) at 6:00 pm.
