Glendale, AZ. – In a competitive but sloppy game that saw both teams combine for thirty percent shooting and forty-one turnovers, the Owls of Oregon Tech managed to score the final five points of the game to sneak by the Lady Firestorm 50-47.
The Lady Firestorm fell behind by eight points at the half but turned up the defensive pressure and pulled to within four points going to the fourth quarter. In the final period, the Firestorm twice took a two-point lead, the second time being with 3:23 left on a
Halle Payne layup. They were held scoreless the rest of the way though, and the Owls scored the final five points of the game to secure their first road win of the season and send the Firestorm to their first loss.
The Lady Firestorm were led by junior
Emily Till who scored 11 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Senior
Alyssa Alvarez struggled from the field and was the next highest point getter with 9 points to go along with 5 rebounds. Junior
Lauren Gunn was a spark plug off the bench scoring 7 points and helped spearhead the teams full court press by securing 3 steals. And on a night which saw the Lady Firestorm go 1-17 from the three-point line – Gunn achieved the one make.
Head Coach
Rusty Rogers had this to say after the game, "When you play a team as tough as Oregon Tech is, you can't get way with missed free throws, sloppy turnovers and poor shooting. Despite all that, our ladies competed in a way that I am very proud of – especially in the second half. I believe we learned a lot from today's game and will help us going forward. It's just too bad we had to lose to learn!"
