ACU Rallies Late To Defeat Moorpark College

Glendale, Ariz.– In a thrilling match up, the Firestorm mounted a late-game comeback to edge out Moorpark College this past Saturday. ACU scored six unanswered goals, including a game-winner by Blake Smith off a feed from Caleb Schaapveld, to complete the comeback and secure the 15-13 victory.

Inside The Game
  • ACU goes down early, starting the game down 0-3 in the first few minutes. 
  • The Firestorm worked their way back into the game with a quick pair of goals from Caleb Schaapveld and Kellen Haigh
  • Gavin Waddell shined in the first quarter, assisting a goal to Caleb Schaapveld and scoring a goal of his own to close out the quarter. The Firestorm trailed 6-4 at the end of the first quarter.
  • Heading into the second quarter, both teams' defenses started to heat up. 
  • ACU held Moorpark to only two goals despite going man-down. The offense was only able to score two goals, however. One was a beautiful goal by Parker Vigue, assisted by Noah Natzic. The other goal was a capitalization on an extra man opportunity. The Firestorm trailed at the half 8-6. 
  • In the third quarter, the game started getting chippy and physical with several
  • injuries on the Firestorm side. It was all Blake Smith, scoring his second
  • goal of the game to start the second half and assisting the next two goals to close out the third quarter. 
  • On the other side of the ball, the defense was causing turnovers left and right while Caleb Frey was holding it down in the net, only allowing two goals and earning three more saves. 
  • The Firestorm began to fight back, pulling their deficit to only 1 goal. ACU still trailed 10-9 at the end of the third quarter.
  • ACU's offense looked electric as they were able to tie the game and take the lead game. Four Firestorm players each scored 3 goals, including Blake Smith, Parker Vigue, Caleb Schaapveld, and Gavin Waddell who scored another two goals.
  • ACU sealed the win, 15-13 as the final score.

The Firestorm will look to build on this dominant performance in their next matchup, as they will travel to Caldwell, ID and face the College of Idaho on Sunday at 2pm.
