ACU Sweeps Doubleheader Against Benedictine Mesa

Glendale, Ariz.- ACU put on a dominant performance in their doubleheader against Benedictine Mesa, sweeping both games in commanding fashion. 

In game one, the Firestorm started the scoring in the second inning with an RBI single by Sean Garcia. Benedictine Mesa responded in the third when Alex Fernandez drove in two runs with a single, giving the Redhawks a brief 2-1 lead. However, ACU tied it in the bottom half on a Trey Tarver RBI single. The teams traded runs in the fourth inning before Arizona Christian exploded for a five-run fifth, highlighted by back-to-back home runs from Jaylen Edmonds and Kane Kiaunis. ACU continued their offensive display with solo homers from Andrew Ivy in the sixth and Logan Sanders in the seventh. Benedictine Mesa managed late solo home runs from Joe Cosenza and Aidan Larson, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit. Frank Wierman earned the win, tossing six innings with 10 strikeouts.  ACU closed out the 10-5 victory with great offensive firepower.


ACU carried their momentum into the nightcap, routing Benedictine Mesa 15-4 in a dominant offensive display. The Firestorm struck early with a two-run single from Kane Kiaunis in the first. Benedictine Mesa briefly kept pace with a sacrifice fly from Evan Graham in the second and a solo home run from Aidan Larson in the third. However, ACU broke the game open with a three-run third and a five-run fourth, fueled by a two-run homer from Kiaunis and a two-run blast from Ryan Eastham. ACU tacked on three more in the fifth, with Logan Sanders and Matthew Beckworth contributing RBI doubles. Eastyn Culp picked up the win, striking out eight over five innings while allowing three earned runs.

  • In the fifth inning, Edmonds and Kiaunis hit back to back 2-run home runs. Later that inning, Sanders singled to left center and earned an RBI after Anderson scored. ACU extended their lead, 8-3. 
  • In the sixth inning, Ivy hit a solo home run to right field. ACU led 9-4. 
  • Sanders also hit a solo home run to left center in the seventh inning. ACU extended their lead, 10-4. 
  • ACU won their first game, 10-5.

  • In the bottom of the first inning, the Firstorm were on the board first after Kiaunis singled to center field and 2 RBI after both Ivy and Edmonds scored. ACU led 2-0. 
  • In the second inning, Tarver singled to right field and earned 2 RBI after both Ivy and Beckworth scored. ACU extended their lead, 4-1. 
  • In the third inning, Beckworth doubled to right center and earned an RBI after Sanders scored. Later, Eastham hit a 2-run home run. ACU extended their lead, 7-4. 
  • The Firestorm had a huge fourth inning after scoring five unanswered runs. ACU extended their lead, 12-4. 
  • In the fifth inning, the Firestorm also scored another three runs. ACU extended their lead, 15-4.  
  •  ACU won their second game, 15-4.

On Saturday, the Firestorm will host Benedictine Mesa for the last two games of the series at Greenway High School at 4pm and 7pm.
