ACU Sweeps Benedictine Mesa and Win 12 Straight Games

Glendale, Ariz.- The Firestorm dominated both games of their doubleheader against the Benedictine University Mesa Red Hawks, winning in decisive fashion to improve to 28-8-1 on the season.

In game one, ACU delivered a dominant performance in the first game of the doubleheader, securing a 12-3 victory. Benedictine Mesa jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to a two-run home run. However, ACU responded quickly, scoring one run in the bottom of the first before exploding in the third inning with a four-run surge. Trey Tarver's two-run home run and Logan Sanders' solo shot gave the Firestorm a 5-3 advantage. ACU added five more runs in the fifth inning, including a two-RBI homer by Tanner Vielguth, and tacked on two more in the sixth with a two-run double by Kane Kiaunis to seal the game. Payton Robertson earned the win, pitching 4.2 no-hit innings in relief while striking out four batters. 

In game two, the Firestorm carried their momentum into the nightcap, shutting out Benedictine Mesa 13-0 in a seven-inning rout to complete the sweep. ACU wasted no time, scoring three runs in the first inning, highlighted by solo and two-run home runs from Andrew Ivy and Trey Tarver. The second inning saw another offensive outburst, with a two-RBI triple from Tarver and an RBI single from Ivy, extending the lead to 7-0. Kane Kiaunis' two-run homer in the fourth and a three-run blast by Kimo Fukofuka in the sixth punctuated the Firestorm's offensive dominance. Kane Kiaunis was stellar on the mound, throwing five shutout innings while allowing just four hits and striking out seven. 

Arizona Christian's offense combined for 25 runs on 29 hits across the two games, showcasing their power with seven home runs. With the sweep, the Firestorm improved to 28-8-1 on the season, and won a record of 12 games straight.

  • In the bottom of the first inning, ACU scored their first run when Kiaunis singled to left center and earned an RBI after Ivy scored. BMU still led 3-1. 
  • In the third inning, the Firestorm had an explosive inning and took the lead when Tarver and Sanders hit back-to-back home runs. ACU took the lead, 5-3. 
  • In the fifth inning, ACU had another huge inning when Tarver, Sanders, and Anderson all hit singles and brought in runners. Vielguth also hit a 2-run home run. ACU extended their lead, 10-3. 
  • In the sixth inning, Kiaunis hit a double to left field and earned 2 RBI after Tarver and Ivy scored. ACU extended their lead, 12-3. 
  • ACU won the first game, 12-3.

  • In the fourth inning, Kiaunis hit a 2-run home run to left field. ACU led 9-0. 
  • In the sixth inning, Kiaunis hit a sacrifice fly and earned an RBI and Fukofuka hit a 3-run home run to left field. ACU led 13-0. 
  • ACU won the second game, 13-0.
