The Firestorm women's basketball team secured their 1st win of the season, defeating Johnson & Wales University (Colorado) by a score of 86-71 on Saturday, November 1 at Northern New Mexico College's "Ohkay Owingeh Classic" in Espanola, New Mexico. ACU and Johnson & Wales traded the lead several times during the first half until Johnson & Wales closed the half with a 5 point lead, 40-35.

The Firestorm came out quickly in the second half, led early by Jazmin Mays who scored the first 6 points of the half, giving ACU the lead after only a minute and a half of the second stanza. The Firestorm took off from there, building a lead to as high as 22 points in the second half as the team shot 54.3% from the field and 50% from behind the arc in the half. The Firestorm ended the game with a Field Goal percentage of 50% for the game.

ACU was led by Alyssa Gruber who scored 19 points and had 8 assists and 8 rebounds. Sophia Anaya also scored 19 points. Taylor Blue led the team in rebounds with 9 and chipped in 15 points in a strong game around the basket for the freshman forward. The Firestorm had a total of 5 players who scored in double figures for the game. In addition to Gruber, Anaya and Blue, Jazmin Mays scored 15 points and Mariah Kempf scored 12 points off the bench.

The Firestorm open their home schedule this weekend with two tough opponents from the state of Montana. The ACU Classic I opens Friday evening with San Diego Christian College playing Montana State University – Northern at 5:30 PM and the Firestorm taking on the University of Great Falls Argos at 7:30 PM. On Saturday at 5:30 PM, San Diego Christian College will play the University of Great Falls and the Firestorm will take on Montana State University – Northern at 7:30 PM.
