Lions Roar to Victory

COSTA MESA, CA– The Arizona Christian Firestorm women's basketball team fell to the 9th ranked Vanguard Lions on Thursday evening by a final of 77-34 at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, California.

With the loss, the Firestorm fall to 5-20 overall and 1-11 in GSAC play. With the victory, the 9th ranked Vanguard University Lions improve to 17-5 overall and 9-3 in GSAC play.

The first half was owned by the Vanguard Lions, as they outscored the Firestorm 40-12 heading into halftime. ACU shot a season worst 19% (5-for-26) from the floor in the first half and went 0-for-8 from behind the three-point arc. The Firestorm did however convert on both of their free-throws in the first half. The Lions shot 48% (14-for-29) from the field in the first half, but struggled behind the three-point arc; shooting 30% (3-for-10). Vanguard made their free-throws count in the first half, knocking down nine of their ten attempts.

In the second half, the Vanguard Lions continued their dominance of ACU; shooting 41% (15-for-36) from the floor. The Lions made just one three-pointer in their seven attempts and shot 6-for-13 from the free-throw line in the second half. The struggles continued for the Firestorm in the second half, as they shot 19% (5-for-26); same as in the first half. ACU went 1-for-6 from behind the three-point arc, but did manage to make 11 of their 14 free-throws in the second half.

No Firestorm player scored in double-figures in the game. Taylor Blue led all ACU scorers with eight points and a team-high nine rebounds in the losing effort.

The Firestorm women remain on the road, as they get set to do battle with the Concordia Eagles on Saturday evening. Tip time is scheduled for 6:30pm in Arizona; 7:30pm local time in Irvine, California. Arizona Christian returns home on February 19th, when Westmont College comes to town, with the game scheduled to start at 5:30pm; with the men's game to follow.
