Box Score Phoenix, AZ- After one quarter of play Arizona Christian found themselves trailing Saint Katherine (CA) before the Firestorm exploded for a 103-44 win over the Firebirds on Friday night. Six different Firestorm reached double figures topped by 24 points from Junior Courtney Christmas.
ACU scored first when Sophomore Toni Davis laid home a bucket. But the missed shots started from there for the Firestorm (6-1) with the Sunbirds (0-13) tying the score at 3-3. SKC moved ahead as the remainder of the first quarter played out as back and forth action. Saint Katherine used a three pointer to take an 18-17 edge when quarter number one came to a close.
One quarter into the game, Arizona Christian found themselves behind in large part due to shooting only 33.3% from the field.
However, Junior Makayla Enders scored the first four points of the second quarter including knocking down a pair of free throws to push ACU ahead for good less than a minute into the quarter.
Shut down defense allowed the Firestorm to outscore the Firebirds 32-4 in the second ten minutes of the night. With ACU holding a 49-22 advantage, Christmas stood at 15 points at the break.
A 41 point third quarter explosion left no doubt about the outcome.
When the final whistle sounded, six Firestorm were in double figures. Behind the 24 points from Christmas, Junior Jada Willingham scored 13 points, Junior Jac Moody added 12 points, and Enders, Davis, and Sophomore Kelsey Miranda all notched 10 points. ACU converted 53 points off 35 turnovers by SKC while the bench differential was 44-6.
Rebounding was on target as well for Arizona Christian as they held a 65-37 edge. Five Firestorm pulled down six rebounds or more with Christmas in front at nine boards. But more impressive was the seven rebounds Freshman Alyssa Deutsch secured in just nine minutes on the court.
On Saturday, the Firestorm will host Yellowstone Christian at 4:00 pm.
