Box Score Phoenix, AZ- With neither team shooting lights out, #3 Vanguard simply used their size to wear down Arizona Christian 58-47 on Saturday evening. Sophomore Courtney Christmas scored 13 points with eight rebounds and three blocks.
Sophomore Jada Willingham converted a pair of free throws to open the scoring. But the Lions (25-2, 13-1 GSAC) scored the next eight points and never lost the lead the rest of the game.
By halftime, VUSC had already secured 11 offensive rebounds and scored 20 points in the paint which included most of their 10 second chance points. Only one player in the first 20 minutes reached double digits in scoring of the 32-20 first half.
The Firestorm (13-12, 7-7 GSAC) tried to make a game of it by outscoring the Lions 11-8 in the third quarter.
Willingham drained a three pointer just seconds into the fourth quarter and ACU was within six. But that is as close as they would get in their bid for an upset.
Both teams shot under 34 percent for the game.
Before the game, ACU WBB honored Senior Courtney Leach playing in her final home game.
On Thursday, the Firestorm will travel up to Rocklin to go head-to-head with William Jessup at 6:30 AT/ 5:30 pm PT.
