Firestorm Swept By Menlo

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Phoenix, AZ- On Saturday, Menlo completed the sweep of Arizona Christian with scores of 10-4 and 8-4.  While the Firestorm hit two balls out of the park, the Oaks crushed 11 extra base hits including three home runs on the day.  Junior Michael Dunnebecke was 2-6 with a double and two runs scored.

After holding the Oaks (17-2, 6-0 GSAC) to just a walk in the first three innings of game one, Junior Bobby Moretti seemed in control.  But Menlo started the fourth with three straight hits- double, single, and double.  All three hits came into score as MC built a 3-0 lead.  They would go on to score in every inning four through nine.

The Firestorm (13-10, 4-6 GSAC) only had two runners safely reach second or third in their first seven innings of hitting.

That all changed in the eighth when Dunnebecke singled out of the nine hole.  Junior Dom Rodriguez doubled to left center with Dunnebecke stopping at third.  Senior Kai Davis singled just inside the right field line to plate both Dunnebecke and pinch runner Senior Zach Vogel.

In the ninth, Senior Jose Pereyda singled.  Senior Harris Lyons, who also reached base previously on two walks, doubled home Pereyda.  Courtesy runner Junior Gary Sheffield scored from second on an RBI single by Junior Matt Mara.  ACU would not get any closer.

Game two saw Menlo jump out to a 5-0 advantage after three innings.  In the bottom half of the third, Arizona Christian cut into their deficit with a three run frame.  Senior Hector Ortiz capped the third with his third home run of the season.

However, the Oaks answered right back with another three run frame in the top of the fourth.

Two batters into the bottom of the fourth, Senior Jacob Rodriguez launched his third home run of the 2017 campaign.

Neither team would muster another run.  Senior Joel Klinkhammer played a big part in that fact as he threw four scoreless innings to close out the game for ACU.

The Firestorm will head out to California to play Shepherd University on Thursday before facing off with Biola on Friday and Saturday.  Thursday's game against the Thundering Herd will be played at Pote Field- Griffith Park at 6:00 pm PT/ 7:00 pm AT.
