ACU Falls in Double Overtime Thriller

Box Score

SURPRISE, Ariz. - The ACU men's soccer program (4-8-0; 2-5-0 GSAC) battled to double overtime against a tough Ottawa University - Arizona (7-3-0, 5-2-0 GSAC) team on Monday afternoon, losing 2-1 on a golden goal on Spirit Field.

Series Notes:

The Firestorm are now 1-4-1 all-time against OUAZ and have lost three-consecutive matches to the Spirit dating back to Oct. 12, 2019.

The Game:

ACU led early after its all-time leading scorer, German Lopez, found the back of the net at 16:41 in the first half.  The Firestorm nearly moved to 2-0 later in the half, but a shot from Savino Livornese careened off the post to take away the scoring opportunity.

OUAZ tied things up early into the second half and the match would eventually go to overtime, mirroring the women's match played just before.  Neither offense scored in the first overtime period, but it would be the Spirit that prevailed in the second overtime as they would score at 104:44 to walk off with the conference win, 2-1.

Thoughts from Coach

"The men battled today and had moments in which they played extremely well.  I think in the end we simply ran out of legs.  Ottawa is a very good team and we've done a great job of competing against them in both of our matches this season.  We had an unlucky break in the first half that cost us, but I am very proud of the guys for their effort, and I believe that they gave everything that they had for each other."
