Box Score Glendale, AZ - The Arizona Christian University men's soccer program (6-0-1) handed #25 Embry Riddle (6-1) its first loss of the season in a 1-0 sudden death overtime upset victory on Thursday afternoon at the ACU Football Field as they continued their unbeaten run.
Thoughts from Coach:
After the match, Head Coach Ted Krzywiecki stated, "I am really happy for our guys who absolutely earned that result as a team. We had many young guys step up with strong performances. It felt like we were on the playground pushing for the final goal. I'm looking forward to our conference schedule we have much to build on and must continue to improve."
The Game:
The Firestorm got the first shot of the game off shortly after the opening whistle but after that the Eagles had the better chances in the first half as they outshot the Firestorm 9-4. Despite that neither team was able to find the back of the next as it was scoreless at half-time. The Firestorm continued grow into the game in the second half as they created more opportunities, but it was the Eagles who had the best opportunity to score when they drew a penalty kick in the 72nd minute. They were unable to capitalize though as Lucas Garcia dragged his shot just wide of the post as the game remained scoreless. The Firestorm created one more late chance through German Lopez but his shot sailed over the net as the game remained scoreless at the end of regulation. Both teams had opportunities to win the game in overtime, but it was the Firestorm who succeeded as Esteban Franco flicked the ball into Lopez who passed it off to Brandon Camacho who fired the ball into the top corner for the game winner at 107:16.
