INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

The Firestorm came out blazing, getting off six unanswered shots to begin the match.  Some sloppy Spirit defense led to a foul and a penalty kick for ACU at 19:21.  Grub reared back and knocked it into the right side of the goal for his second goal of the season and what would hold up as the game winning goal.  Gallardo continued to look sharp, recording three saves in just the first half of the game.  Firestorm led 1-0 going into halftime.  The second half of the match was a continuous back and forth between the Spirit and the Firestorm, both getting outside chances at the goal and both playing great defense.  The Spirit would get two shots on goal going into the 63rd minute, but Gallardo would simply not allow it.  Abbitt was able to put a shot on the goal at 64:39 but it was saved by the OUAZ keeper.  Gallardo would go on to record another two saves, making it 8 (season high) on the night to secure a shutout for the Firestorm.

Thoughts from Coach Ted Krzywiecki:

"Tonight was a complete team effort to get a result against a very good team. I felt good going into this match because our boys were focused in training all week after a tough match on Tuesday. This was a solid step forward for a young group. We are looking forward to a break in games to work on some things and get healthy before conference play."

Next Match:

Men's soccer finally returns home next week to play just their second game in front of the home crowd.  They'll take on the Benedictine Redhawks for the second time this season on Monday, September 26th.  That match will be played on ACU Football Field, kickoff at 8 PM.
