Box Score Women's soccer looks for another win
Brandon Dunson - Asst. Sports Information
On Tuesday the Firestorm Women's Soccer Team will look gather their third victory as they take on Embry Riddle (AZ) University. ACU suffered an 0-4 loss last Wednesday to Soka University of America but currently sits 2-1 and has a positive vibe going into this week's game.
"We are anxiously awaiting the Embry Riddle game tomorrow night," stated Coach Berrios. "The team is extremely excited, especially since it's a home game and we are expecting a big crowd since it's our All Athletes Game. We have been working extremely hard since returning from Soka where we suffered a tough loss in a game where we had to play 84 minutes with 10 players as our keeper was red carded 6 minutes into the game. There is no doubt the outcome of that game would have been different 11 on 11. We learned a great lesson from that Soka game and we hope to show improvement this Tuesday."
The Firestorm will take on a 3-0 Embry Riddle squad that has been very stingy on the defensive end as
none of their opponents have scored a point on them to date. The Eagles have wins over Providence Christian College, Johnson & Wales University (Colorado), and Southwestern College (Kansas).
"Embry Riddle is a very good team and we expect a very tough game. This will no doubt be one of our toughest games of the season. We are certain they will come with high energy and put us under pressure from the go. We need to be mentally and physically ready for this test. And I believe based on our last couple of sessions that our players are focused and ready."
The Firestorm have been pretty solid defensively as well allowing only 5 total scores in 17 shots on goal in their three contests.
"Seniors Bree Duhamel and Amber Faulkner and Juniors Makenna Newman, Marissa Stevens, and Dakota Wilkinson have jumped out to a quick start. All five have made huge positive impacts in the first three games of the season. The team in general has made drastic improvements and we will need to be at our best in order to obtain a good result against a very good squad.
Tuesday's game will take place 7:00 P.M. at Rose Mofford Soccer Complex in Phoenix. There is expected to be a packed crowd that will feature all Firestorm student-athletes.
