Box Score 2 Phoenix, AZ- Freshman Marisa Ortiz rolled up her second hat trick in as many weeks while Junior Andrea Ortiz and Freshman Kylie Neafus each added a goal of their own. The trio guided Arizona Christian to a 5-1 victory over Saint Katherine on Friday evening.
After one missed shot by Junior Zoe Kalos, M. Ortiz found the back of the net just 3:21 into the contest. Kalos and A. Ortiz connected two one touch passes that sent a ball into box with M. Ortiz, a defender, and the SKC keeper all converging and M. Ortiz won the race and use one touch to slot a shot past the keeper into the net. For M. Ortiz, it was goal number 11 on the season and the ninth straight ACU goal scored by the younger Ortiz sister.
Just under seven minutes later, Junior Rianna Poarch slipped a pass through the defense of the Firebirds (2-8) to free Neafus for a one-on-one. Neafus did not miss the chance to convert her first collegiate goal and give the Firestorm (6-5-1) a two goal cushion. She became the first Firestorm besides M. Ortiz to score in nine games.
Eight minutes beyond goal two, M. Ortiz and Kalos returned the favor and used one touch passes to drop off an opportunity for A. Ortiz. She struck a 30 yard shot that probably should have been saved but deflected off the keeper's hands and into the net.
The Firebirds countered with a goal in the 22nd minute to make it a 3-1 score that held up through the break.
Seventy-seven seconds into the second half, Junior Tasha Coleman drilled a free kick on target that was saved into the crossbar. M. Ortiz followed up the shot and made it a 4-1 contest.
Roughly six and a half minutes later, Kalos attempted a close range shot that was saved as a rebound and M. Ortiz pounced again calmly knocking the ball into the open net. Her third goal of the evening gave her a total 13 goals on the season.
The Firestorm honored their 10 seniors- Serenity Masterson (three saves), Marissa Stevens, Dakota Gourgel, Gaby Torres, Daniella Petersen, Makenna Newman, Kailin Anderson (four shots off the bench), Delaney Kim, Kelsey Stipek, and Alaina Vetnar- before the contest.
On Saturday, the Firestorm will return to the Rose Mofford Sports Complex to host The Master's for an 11:00 am match.
