Box Score Phoenix, AZ- For the first time since in their first season in the GSAC, Arizona Christian Women's Soccer is back in the GSAC win column after knocking off William Jessup 3-1 on Saturday. Freshman Marisa Ortiz delivered a huge effort by scoring a hat trick with all three ACU goals.
The first eight minutes appeared like ACU was going to control the game as they cracked three shots- two high and one into the back of the net. A shot just 46 seconds into the match sailed high from Senior Makenna Newman. Two and a half minutes later, Freshman Braxton Carhart sent a free kick over the crossbar. About eight minutes into the game, Carhart sent Ortiz in behind the defense and Ortiz notched her fifth goal of the season for a quick 1-0 lead.
However, William Jessup started to apply pressure and take shots from all over the field. Based on the fact that WJU held a 19-8 shot advantage at the break, logic would say the Warriors (4-6, 0-2 GSAC) would be the ones sitting on a 3-0 cushion.
But Ortiz capitalized on her chances and converted two more goals thanks by taking advantage of her speed to get behind the defense. Sophomore Taylor Baker served the ball that gave Ortiz her opportunity to net her sixth goal of the season in the 33rd minute. Then Ortiz grabbed the ACU team lead in goals scored with seven when Newman connected with her for the 3-0 edge.
After the break, WJU kept knocking on the door but could not capitalize until the 81st when Janelle Schuette converted a rebounded shot into a goal.
Nine minutes later when the final whistle blew, the Firestorm (3-4-1, 1-3 GSAC) secured their first GSAC win since 2012.
Senior Serenity Masterson upped her career high in saves by one when she recorded 15 saves against WJU.
Director of Soccer Alan Berrios commented-"Girls worked hard today and took advantage of the opportunities we created in the attacking third. Defensively we were disciplined and got behind the ball quickly in transition. Ortiz had a breakout game taking advantage of quality balls being played into her from the middle of the pitch. Overall it was good to get the first conference win since 2012."
The Firestorm will play again on Thursday evening when they host Johnson & Wales (CO) at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex for a 5:00 pm match.
