Burks Cycles On The Day

Phoenix, AZ- Senior Christopher Burks led Arizona Christian to a 7-3 and 5-3 sweep of Providence Christian on Monday after he went 5-7 and hit for the cycle on the day with a home run, single, single, triple, and double.  Seniors Cooper Johnson and Joshua Garcia earned the wins.

Burks jump started the scoring when leading off in the bottom of the first as he crushed a 3-2 pitch over the Firestorm Baseball scoreboard in right field.  For Burks, it was his first home run of the season.

In the second, the Firestorm (8-8) used a single from Senior Tatum Hendrix followed by an RBI single for Senior AJ Arroyo to take a 2-0 lead.

The Sea Beggars (1-17) tied the game with a run in the third and one in the fifth.  Steven Pozo would eventually score all three runs for PCC in the opener.

ACU grabbed the lead right back as they put up a three spot in the bottom of the fifth.  Burks walked and came flying around from first on an RBI double down the right field line by Senior Tate Erickson.  Erickson scored on a wild pitch and throwing error.  Junior Jake Howard doubled and came into score on a Hendrix RBI single.

An unearned run in the sixth made it 6-3 before Junior Jose Pereyda capped the scoring with a home run to left in the eighth- his first dinger of the season.

Johnson went five innings with five strikeouts for the win.  Juniors Garrett Day and Austin Bright both threw a scoreless inning of work.  Junior Chris Paulson threw the eighth allowing a run.  Sophomore Anthony Pins pitched a scoreless ninth.

Providence Christian put up a two spot in the top of the second inning of game two.  Arizona Christian answered with two in the third thanks to a 2 RBI double by Howard.

Two more scored for ACU in the fourth after Junior Jacob Rodriguez was hit by a pitch, moved along to second on sacrifice bunt by Junior Dave Grubaugh, and scored on an RBI single by Sophomore Michael Dunnebecke.  Dunnebecke scored easily when Burks ripped his triple just inside the left field line.  Burks was left stranded at third.

PCC scored an unearned run in the fifth to make it a 4-3 game.

The Firestorm cashed in an insurance run in the sixth.  Dunnebecke reached on a fielder's choice and raced home when Burks reached his day cycle with a double down the left field line.

Sophomore Brett Swartz started going two plus and allowing two runs.  Garcia came on in relief with two on and nobody out in the third and used one pitch to induce a 6-4-3 double play.  Garcia threw three innings allowing an unearned run to be credited with the win.  Pins tossed another scoreless inning before Sophomore Wade Mason recorded his first save of the season.

The Firestorm will head up to Menlo in Atherton for a weekend series beginning on Friday.  Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm (AT)/ 2:00 pm (PT).
