Early Goals But No More

Box Score

Phoenix, AZ- On Friday night, Arizona Christian and #24 Embry-Riddle both scored within the first 19 minutes of action.  The match could have been called and booked as a 1-1 tie at that point as 91 more minutes of double overtime play did not see a score change.  Senior Makenna Newman scored the ACU goal.

Most of the all-in crowd was not even settled before Newman scored the game's first goal.  Stepping in the path of a misplayed ball by the backline of the Eagles (4-1-2), Newman took a touch into the box and buried a shot inside the right post into the back of the net.  Her team leading sixth goal of the season just 33 seconds in gave the Firestorm (2-0-1) a very early 1-0 lead.

ACU survived a few more dangerous chances over the next 18 minutes including a cross left as a rebound in the middle of the goal that was pushed left and a point blank diving stop by Senior Serenity Masterson.

However, just under 19 minutes into the game, ERAU converted the equalizer.  A failed clearing attempt by the ACU defense following a corner kick resulted in Krista Lee knocking in the goal from the left side.

The Firestorm attempted four shots in the final 13 minutes of the half with two on goal though the two entered not target were actually more dangerous than the couple on target.

Freshman Marisa Ortiz topped all shooters with four shots in the first 45 minutes.

Half number two saw only 11 combined shots by the two teams with three of those actually on target.

In the 79th minute, Masterson, who ended up with seven saves, timed her jump correctly to deny a shot headed under the crossbar.

The extra session saw the Eagles control the action as they maintained possession and outshot the Firestorm 9-2.  But in the end, the game remained a 1-1 draw.

Junior Zoe Kalos launched three shots on the night.

The backline of ACU- Freshman Kaitlyn May, Freshman Braxton Carhart, Junior Tasha Coleman, and Freshman Tessa Williams- played a big role in the match remaining locked at one.

Following their final pre-GSAC tune-up, the Firestorm will now head into Golden State Athletic Conference play as they head to Biola on Tuesday.  The women will kick-off as the second match of the doubleheader at 7:00 pm.
