ACU Does What Seven Others Could Not

Box Score

Phoenix, AZ- Facing a team that had only allow one goal on the season, Arizona Christian did what seven other teams could not as they scored on Hope International.  Junior Ryan Scarpulla notched the ACU goal in the 3-1 loss to HIU on Saturday.

The first 15 minutes saw both teams exchanging their best blows with the other as the Firestorm (2-2-1, 0-2 GSAC) matched the two shots of the Royals (7-0-2, 2-0 GSAC).  Freshman Juan Mora took both ACU shots.

Just before 16 minutes into the contest, HIU converted their third shot of the afternoon into a goal- the first of two goals for Jorge Pineda.

ACU attempted four more shots before the break- including two from Senior Luis Tapia- but still trailed 1-0 at the break.

Two minutes and change into the second half, Pineda dribbled around three defenders before finishing a shot in the lower left corner.

Both teams had chances but another goal was not tallied until the 78th minute when the Royals made it a 3-0 game.

Ninety seconds later Mora laid a ball off for Junior Hasani Nunez who was getting up into the attack from his right defender spot.  After a touch or two, Nunez in turn served up a cross from the right that saw Scarpulla put a header into the back of the net.  Scarpulla accounted for his second goal of the season.

The last ten minutes of the contest was played out with ACU as the aggressor but they could not lock in another goal.

On Thursday, the Firestorm will host Menlo at the Rose Mofford Sports complex.  Kickoff for the men is set for 3:30 pm.
