Box Score Rocklin, CA- A year after scoring three goals against William Jessup as a freshman, Sophomore Marisa Ortiz was part of all three ACU goals at WJU on Thursday afternoon with two goals and an assist. Sophomore Kylie Neafus scored the game winner of the 3-2 Arizona Christian win.
The Firestorm (5-6-1, 1-3-1 GSAC) applied the pressure in the first several minutes. Senior Tasha Coleman hit a free kick on target five minutes into action. Less than two minutes later, Freshman Irene Ledezma freed Sophomore Marisa Ortiz for a 1-on-1 and Ortiz netted her ninth goal of the season for the early 1-0 edge.
But the Warriors (0-11, 0-5 GSAC) controlled the action for the next 10 minutes. At the 15 minute mark, WJU found the goal for the first time thanks to a shot from Rebecca Garcia. Five minutes later, William Jessup scored their second goal after corner kick resulted in three shots with the third one by Janelle Schuette ending up in the net for 2-1 advantage.
ACU took four of the final five shots in the half- Coleman (high), Freshman Valeria Silva (wide), and Ortiz twice missing wide. At the break, both teams had taken seven shots as WJU held the 2-1 lead.
Half number two started much like the first half as Arizona Christian came out on the attack. Three ACU shots to one WJU shot to start the half.
In the 62nd minute, Ortiz struck again as she drilled a laser inside the left post to tie the game at 2-2. Her tenth goal of the year placed Ortiz just one goal shy of tying the ACU women's soccer career mark of 25 goals.
Ortiz was in search of a hat trick as she fired off 11 shots but ended with the two goals.
William Jessup just missed taking the lead in the 79th minute when they hit the post and sent the rebound over the goal.
Instead less than 45 seconds later, Ortiz connected with Neafus who notched the game winner with her fourth goal of the year.
WJU had their final chance- a free kick that sailed high- in the 80th minute. The final shot total was 14-10 in favor of ACU but the Firestorm did not allow a shot on goal in the second half.
Head Coach Alan Berrios commented, "Glad the girls pulled out a win today. Game was very choppy. Tough game. Jessup made it difficult for us to get into a rhythm. I give them a lot of credit as they worked really hard. I thought we did just enough in the second half to get the result we were looking for. Always good to get a win on the road in our conference."
On Saturday, the Firestorm will meet up with Menlo to wrap up their Northern California GSAC swing. Game time is set for 11:00 am.
