Balanced Attack Leads To Shutout

Box Score

Phoenix, AZ- Arizona Christian used a balance attack as six different players had a goal or assist leading to a 4-0 shutout of Benedictine- Mesa on Saturday.  Freshman Sarahie Torres had the biggest day with a goal and two assists in the final tune-up before GSAC play.

Sophomore Marisa Ortiz turned the first stat of the day into a shot requiring a save just two plus minutes into the contest.

A minute later, Sophomore Kylie Neafus turned the corner behind the defense on the left side and found Freshman Irene Ledezma right in front of the goal who knocked home the first goal of the game and her first of the season.

The Firestorm (4-2) controlled the run of play as they only allowed one shot in the opening 45 minutes.

Despite cracking 14 first half shots, ACU would not find the goal again until the 31st minute.  Working the right side of the field, Freshman Hanna Perez connected with Torres near the top right corner of the box and Torres lifted a shot that carried over the goalkeeper's head before settling into the goal on the far side.

Neafus hit a low liner with pace in the 45th minute but right to the goalkeeper- the only shot in the final 15 minutes of the half.

The Redhawks (1-3) had three decent looks in the first seven minutes of the second half sandwiched around a free kick from Ortiz that rattled off the post.

In the 57th minute, Torres hustled to save a ball from carrying over the end line and did a 180 to leave a ball off for oncoming Freshman Veronica Cruz who slotted home the goal into the lower right corner.

Ten minutes later, Ortiz completed the scoring when she used a scissor kick from the top of the box to drive a shot into the ground and saw it kangaroo over the keeper into the net.

The back line of Senior Tasha Coleman, Sophomore Sarah Carrell, and Freshmen Amariah Kotte and Hannah Matthews were rock solid.  Freshman Tahlia Miears earned three saves on the day.

Head Coach Alan Berrios commented, "Very happy for the girls today.  We made some adjustments from the first time we played them.  And I thought the girls executed them very well today.  Thankful to finish our nonconference schedule with the win.  Now we have three days to prepare for conference."

On Thursday, the Firestorm will open GSAC play as they traveled to Hope International in Fullerton, CA, for 10:30 am kick-off.  The game will be played at Fullerton College.
