Box Score 2 Arizona Christian University collected 26 hits on the day on their way to sweeping on day two of the 4-Him Classic.
In game one, the Firestorm battled back and forth with University of Saint Katherine that ended in extra-innings. The Firestorm took an early lead in the top of the second inning when Senior Michael Dunnebecke singled to the shortstop to lead off the inning. Dunnebecke was able to swipe second base and score on a single to right field by Junior Nicholas McCormick.
The Firebirds were able to regain the lead in the bottom of the third inning plating two runs to take a 2-1 lead.
The Firestorm offense came back swinging in the top of the sixth inning when Senior Marco Castilla led off the inning with a single to right field. Sophomore Brent Smith pinch ran for Castilla and was advanced to second base on a single to left field by Senior Adam Wolfe. After a Firebird's pitching change and passed ball, Senior Jonathan Nunnally, Jr. plated Smith on an RBI ground out to the shortstop tying the game at two apiece. Senior Matt Mara was able to drive in the second run of the inning scoring Wolfe on an RBI sacrifice fly to centerfield allowing the Firestorm to take a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning.
Saint Katherine's offense was able to match ACU's output in the sixth inning plating two runs on three hits and one errors.
Arizona Christian then answered again in the top of the seventh inning when McCormick led off the inning with a single. Later in the inning, Sophomore Jordan Meier was able to reach first base on a fielder's choice and taking second base on a wild pitch. Meier later scored on a Wolfe RBI single to right field- knotting up the game at four runs apiece.
The scheduled seven inning contest then entered extra innings with playing two innings of scoreless baseball. The Firestorm would capitalize in the top of the ninth inning plating four runs on three hits. Senior Gary Sheffield, Jr. led off the inning drawing a walk and later advanced to second on a passed ball. Wolfe stood in the box and took a pitch advancing to first base on a hit by pitch. Sheffield was able to score on a Nunnally single advancing Wolfe to third base. Dunnebecke then drove in two runs on a single through the left side allowing the Firestorm to take an 8-4 led. In the bottom half of the inning the Firestorm held the Firebirds to one hit securing the victory.
Junior Robert Milacki started on the mound for ACU throwing six innings allowing four runs (three earned) while fanning six USK batters. Junior Baylor Giannini earned the win tossing two innings allowing one hit while striking out two.
Dunnebecke led the Firestorm at the plate in game one going 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Wolfe added a second three hit performance going 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Castilla, McCormick, and Senior Dom Rodriguez all collected two hits apiece in the contest.
In game two on the day, Arizona Christian University squared off with San Diego Christian College in a non-conference affair. The Firestorm used a strong offense performance to collect the 8-3 victory over the Hawks (4-2).
ACU stated the scoring in the top of the third inning plating two runs on two hits. Sheffield led the inning off doubling down the left field line and later advancing to third on a wild pitch. Castilla drew a walk and advanced to second on a Wolfe ground ball to third base. Nunnally then doubled scoring Sheffield and advancing Castilla to third base. Mara then scored Castilla from third on a sacrifice fly allowing the Firestorm to take a 2-0 lead.
Arizona Christian added to the lead in the fourth inning when Rodriguez doubled down the right field line and later scored on a McCormick sacrifice fly. ACU would continue the offense scoring two runs in the fifth, one run in the sixth and two more in the seventh to secure the 8-3 victory over the Hawks of San Diego Christian.
Rodriguez led the Firestorm at the plate in game two going 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and one RBI. Sheffield, Nunnally and Dunnebecke all collected two hits apiece in the contest.
Senior Devin Rose earned the win on the mound tossing five innings allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out four. Senior Austin Bright and Junior Steven Butts both saw action out of the bullpen in game two.
The Firestorm moved to 4-2 on the year and will continue action tomorrow on day three of the 4-Him Classic as they host the Yotes of College of Idaho. First pitch is scheduled for 9:00 am.
