Box Score 2 Phoenix, AZ- The Arizona Christian University Baseball team swept Menlo College on Saturday to move into sixth place in the Golden State Athletic Conference standings. ACU won game one 14-8 and took game two on a walk-off hit by Junior Trent Troncone in the eighth inning winning 8-7.
The Firestorm (16-24, 11-18 GSAC) produced 22 runs on 18 hits through the doubleheader that lasted a combined 7.5 hours and saw a total of 24 pitchers used in both games.
Game one produced fireworks early as the Oaks (15-23, 11-19 GSAC) plated two runs in the top half of the first inning on back-to-back home runs.
ACU fired back in the bottom half of the frame as Senior Jonathan Nunnally, Jr. blasted a three-run home run over the left field fence to take the early 3-2 lead. Senior Michael Dunnebecke would later score in the inning on a wild pitch to stretch the Firestorm lead to 4-2.
The Oaks and Firestorm would play back and forth until the bottom half of the eighth inning when ACU plated five runs on two hits that provided Arizona Christian two walks and two hit-by-pitch.
Nunnally, Jr. paced the Firestorm at the plate going 2-for-3 with a homer, four RBI, and three runs scored. Dunnebecke ended the game going 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Sophomore Trevor McGee started on the mound tossing 3.1 innings allowing six runs on seven hits in the no decision. Junior Steven Butts earned the win throwing 2.2 innings allowing two runs on four hits. Butts is now 3-1 on the season. Senior Austin Bright earned the scoreless three-inning save- his first of the season.
Game two brought the same amount of drama as the game was played into extra-innings as the teams were racing against the sunset.
ACU held the early advantage as they scored in the first three frames of the ballgame. After sitting in a 7-7 tie through the seventh, the teams went to extras.
Dunnebecke led off the bottom half of the eighth inning with a walk. Junior Nicholas McCormick followed suite and also drew a walk to put runners at first and second with no outs. Senior Matt Mara would be hit by a pitch to fill the bases with Firestorm baserunners. Troncone came through roping a single to left field for the walk-off Firestorm victory.
Troncone went 3-for-4 in the game with two RBI and two runs scored. Senior Marco Castilla went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
Sophomore Cam Sharp started on the mound tossing 2.2 innings allowing two runs on three hits. Junior Stephen Streltzoff, Senior Tony Pins, Junior Baylor Giannini, Junior River Carbone and Junior Eric Schwalbe all saw action on the bump out of the bullpen. Schwalbe earned the win, his first of the season, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings of baseball allowing one hit.
ACU will travel to play William Jessup in a three-game GSAC series next weekend. Friday's game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 pm at McBean Park.
