Box Score Glendale, AZ - The Arizona Christian University women's soccer program (3-4-1, 0-0-1) opened up GSAC play with a thriller as they rallied from two goals down to tie 3-3 with William Jessup (6-2-1, 0-0-1) after neither team could find a winner on Thursday afternoon at the ACU Football Field.
Thoughts From Coach:
After the game Head Coach Courtney Nash said, "I'm extremely proud of the ladies because they didn't give up today. We came out slow and sluggish and it cost us two goal, but we battled back and showed great resilience."
The Game:
It was all Warriors in the beginning of the game as they opened the scoring at 11:14 to make it 1-0. The Firestorm backline responded well as they held the Warriors to just a 1-0 lead at halftime. The Firestorm looked to find the equalizer in the second half but it was the Warriors who would strike again just a few minutes into the frame as they took a 2-0 advantage at 48:35. The Firestorm never gave up though and quickly responded with a goal as Annalise Esparza found Irene Ledezma on the counterattack to make it 2-1 at 50:42. From there the Firestorm seized the momentum and found the equalizer as Cami Mercado latched onto a ball into the box off an indirect free kick to tie the game 2-2 at 58:52. The scoring wasn't done though as it was the Warriors time to answer and they did as they retook a 3-2 lead at 67:28. Then right before the end of the second half the Firestorm found the equalizer again as Mercado played Yulissa Rascon in behind the defense to make it 3-3 at 88:21. The Warriors had a late chance just as time was expiring but the ball sailed over the crossbar as the game ended 3-3 after regulation. The Warriors had a couple of chances to win the game in overtime, but the Firestorm defense held strong as the game ended in a 3-3 tie after two overtime periods.
