Record-Breaking Firestorm Enter Final Stretch

Glendale, Ariz.- ACU Women's Soccer prepares for their last two GSAC games of the regular season, with Vanguard and The Master's coming down to ACU Football Field. The Lady Firestorm enter with a 4-1 conference record and are third in the GSAC standings. Coach Gina Cormier seeks her 10th win in her first year as head coach.

The Lady Firestorm (9-3-1) broke the program record for most wins (8 in 2017) in a season by defeating Life Pacific 5-1 last Saturday. Shayla Mobo led ACU with two goals and two assists, earning GSAC Player of the Week honors for her performance. Cami Mercado, the Firestorm's leading goal scorer with 12, matched Mobo with two goals and Tatum Dowell had the final goal against the Warriors. ACU has won five its last six matches, having the possibility of winning the GSAC regular-season title with a two-game sweep this week.

Series Notes

In 12 all-time meetings, ACU is 1-11 against the Vanguard University Lions. The Firestorm's lone victory came last October at ACU Football Field, as Isabelle Cruz scored the game-winner in a 1-0 contest (Cami Mercado assisted). ACU was shutout in all but the previous two matches (one goal scored in each). 

The Lady Firestorm own a 0-17-1 all-time record against The Master's dating back to 2009. TMU holds a goal advantage of 73-7 in 18 games. Winless in this series, ACU managed a 1-1 tie last season at ACU Football Field. Isabelle Cruz netted the tying goal (unassisted) in the 53rd minute.

Coach Gina Cormier's Thoughts

"We are really excited for this week," Coach Cormier said. "This is where a team dreams to be at the end of the regular season, in contention for a conference championship in the final games. We see this as an opportunity to prove how much we have grown as a team. One thing I'm sure of, we will play our hearts out and compete."

Vanguard University 

The Vanguard University Lions (6-3-4) answered the call after consecutive 1-0 losses with a convincing 4-0 win over Jessup last Saturday. Four different Lions scored (Adiah Edwardson, Payton Sak, Bethany Urrabazo, Alyssa Fong) in the victory to improve their GSAC record to 2-2-1. Goalkeeper Jordin Holmquist-Wilder earned her third shutout of the season. Fong leads VU with four goals;  Kennedy Cypher, Jena Howard and Francesca Lindstrom are all in second place with three goals. Cypher is the assist leader with four in 2023. Holmquist-Wilder has a 78.8 save percentage and 52 saves entering this matchup.

The Master's University

The Master's University Mustangs (8-3-3) were in a shootout with OUAZ in their latest match, ultimately salvaging a 4-4 tie. Trailing 3-1, TMU rattled off three goals in a 4-minute span to take a 4-3 lead before conceding the game-tying score to OUAZ in the 82nd minute. Sinclair Francescon is the scoring leader for TMU with seven in 2023, including two against OUAZ; Hannah Burke and Cynthia Ramos both have five goals. Burke is the assist leader with six; Jordyn Bingaman has five. Goalkeeper Autumn Jensen has started all 14 games and carries a 80.3 save percentage and 53 saves into Saturday's game.
