The Arizona Christian University Firestorm wrestling team battled through a challenging tournament at the Conner Oppenheim Open hosted by Doane University, demonstrating both individual brilliance and team grit across multiple weight classes.
The standout performance of the day came from true freshman
Sean Archuleta, who delivered the tournament's most significant upset by defeating the nation's 8th-ranked wrestler from Saint Mary University in an electrifying overtime victory. Entering the tournament ranked 24th himself, Archuleta proved he's a rising star to watch in the wrestling world.
Other notable performances came from wrestlers like
Carlo Castagnaro and
Michael Moreno, who both advanced deep into their respective brackets before ultimately falling to top-20 ranked competitors. At the 165-pound weight class, Castagnaro secured impressive victories by fall in his first two matches before a narrow decision loss in the quarterfinals.
In the amateur 149-pound bracket,
Josiah Bohn and
Albert Ambriz both demonstrated remarkable consistency, each winning five matches throughout the day. Though both ultimately fell short of their ultimate goals, their performances highlighted the depth of talent in the Firestorm wrestling program.
Head Coach Butterfield captured the team's spirit, stating, "We are proud of all of our wrestlers and the way they carried themselves in a national level competition this weekend. Several of our wrestlers who entered today ranked in the country competed well, but fell short of placing in large 32-man brackets that only placed top 4."
