Mesa, AZ - Freshman
Rylan Rhodes set a school record in the 60-meter sprint, and then in the Long Jump hit the NAIA "B" standard with a jump of 18' 4.5" and the Arizona Christian University Women's Track & Field team kicked off the indoor season at the Desert Spectacular meet on the track of Mesa Community College.
As Rhodes was running a school record in the 60 meters, another freshman,
Georgia Gomez, was a mere .01 seconds behind her which was good for #2 all-time in program history. Gomez also ran in the 150 meters and 300 meter races and was the team's top performer. Freshman
Anabel Johnson finished just behind Gomez in the 150 meters running 20.59, and sophomore Jocelyn Odiot finished behind Gomez in the 300, setting a new personal record for herself in the process of 45.83. Freshman
Shaylee Quenzer ran a strong 400 meters finishing second overall among women with a time of 1:03.29.
In other events, freshman
Sedona Dietrich led the lady throwers in the Discus (101'3") and sophomore
Kayla Hourigan led in the Shot Put with a toss of 31' 5.75". Sophomore
McKenna Rogers was the top female pole vaulter at the meet with a season opening mark of 10" 00'.
Thoughts from Head Coach Brian Bell
"The coaching staff and I are really pleased with everyone's performance today. Sprinters, jumpers, throwers and mid-distance athletes are well ahead of where we would hope them to be this time of year. We had three goals for this meet: to represent Christ well, be good teammates and to excel on the track. The team accomplished this mission and made us all proud. We have a large and very young team. This meet was a great test for first semester training, and it will lay the foundation for success later this spring at the GSAC T&F Championships."
